Apprenticeship program
Are you a graduate of the Carpentry Foundation program (Level 1) and ready to continue your training? If you have some work experience, Carpentry Level 2 at VIU’s tiwšɛmawtxʷ campus is the next step.
What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship combines technical training in school with work-based training in industry.
Take Carpentry Level 2 technical training to:
- become a more skilled carpenter
- become more employable
- earn more money
- start working towards your Red Seal
Level 2
Carpentry Level 2 training is seven weeks long. There are financial supports to help you take time off work to complete it. It covers:
- documentation and organizational skills
- tools and equipment
- survey instruments
- site layout
- concrete formwork
- wood frame construction
- finishing materials
- building Science
Carpentry apprenticeship levels 3 and 4 are offered at VIU’s Nanaimo campus. Complete all 4 training levels, do 6360 work-based training hours and take the Interprovincial exam to earn your Red Seal.

Apprenticeship training classes at VIU tiwšɛmawtxʷ campus fill on a first-come, first-registered basis.

Admission requirements
- successfully completed Carpentry Foundation Level 1
- registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC
- have an employer sponsor

All fees are subject to change without prior notice and are expected to increase by 2% each year on April 1.
Carpentry Level 2 apprenticeship at VIU tiwšɛmawtxʷ campus starts on May 10, 2027.
